Virtuelle Server (VPS)

A VPS (Virtual Private Server), also known as a vServer, is a virtual machine that is hosted on a physical server and allows users to run isolated server environments with their own operating systems and applications. VPSs offer flexibility and control similar to dedicated servers, but at an affordable price. They are ideal for users who need their own server but don't want the cost and management of a physical server.

With a vServer, you have the ability to run a variety of tasks, including web hosting, database management, gaming servers, development environments and more. A VPS provides a scalable and customizable platform for a variety of applications, for both Linux and Windows operating systems.

A VPS offers numerous benefits, including flexibility, scalability, security and cost savings. You can scale your resources as needed, customize your environment and use isolated server environments for improved security. With a VPS, you can maintain control of your server environment without the cost and hassle of a dedicated server.

Both VPS (Virtual Private Server) and Root Servers are hosting solutions that give you access to your own virtual server.

The main difference lies in the underlying architecture and the type of provisioning:

• VPS x86: Based on the x86 architecture with 64-bit capability. Suitable for a wide range of applications.
• VPS ARM: Based on the ARM architecture, also 64-bit capable. Especially efficient for specialized workloads such as IoT applications, edge computing, or resource-friendly server applications.
• Root Server: CPU performance is provided exclusively to the customer, making these systems particularly well-suited for resource-intensive or specialized applications.

For all these products, we recommend having knowledge in server administration to make the most of their capabilities.

You select the server location directly on the product page before placing your order. The following locations are available:

• Vienna (VIE)
• Nuremberg (NUE)
• Amsterdam (AMS)
• Manassas/USA (MNZ) and
• Singapore (SIN)

The respective abbreviation shows you in which data center your server is physically operated. 

There is also the option “No preference Europe” - you cannot specify the exact location, but your server will be set up exclusively in a European data center (e.g. Vienna, Nuremberg, or Amsterdam), depending on available capacity.

 We offer a 12-month contract term for our regular rates. Alternatively, you can choose the hourly billing model. Special rates may have different terms.

Yes, you can expand your VPS with Local Block Storage after setup. This provides you with additional storage space for your data and applications to expand your performance and storage requirements.

VPS plans from Generation 10 onwards can be expanded up to a maximum of 8 TB. Generation VPS G11s plans (VPS pico G11s, VPS nano G11s) cannot be expanded with Local Block Storage. VPS Lite G12 plans can be expanded up to 4 TB.

The servers are billed in two ways: 

• on an hourly basis
• or on a 12-month basis

With the hourly rates, you pay monthly in advance and are billed on an hourly basis when you end the contract. There are no minimum contract terms or notice periods. 

The 12-month billing offers you long-term planning security and possible cost savings over a longer contract term.

netcup does not offer any ready-made Windows servers. However, you have the option of installing Windows on your server yourself via the SCP. Please note that this is a 180-day test license. Beyond that, you cannot purchase Windows software licenses via netcup.

Yes, you can upgrade to a higher plan within the same generation (e.g., VPS 1000 G12s to VPS 2000 G12s) or price group (e.g., VPS Lite 1 G12s to VPS Lite 2 G12s). To do so, use the upgrade function in the Customer Control Panel (CCP). Upgrades from and to promotional products or special products are not possible.

A direct upgrade is not possible. However, you can order a VPS G12 plan, cancel the VPS G11 plan at the end of your minimum contract term, and migrate your data.

Our current product range is based on Generation 12 products. Generation 11 products are therefore generally no longer available for purchase. Upgrades within Generation 11 are still possible.

You have the following three options available:

• IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity
• IPv6 connectivity
• Cloud vLAN only

No, you cannot change the location of your server after it has been set up. Migration is only possible by placing a new order at the desired location and manually transferring all data.
