Centralization: You already have several domains with different providers and would like to consolidate them with a single provider to simplify administration.
Domain transfer step-by-step guide
A domain transfer can be carried out in several steps. Here are the basic steps you should follow.
Prepare your domain
Before you initiate a transfer, make sure that your domain is ready for the transfer. This includes:
- Checking that your domain is at least 60 days old, as new domains cannot be transferred within the first 60 days of registration.
- Make sure the domain is not locked. A domain can be locked for various reasons, such as payment arrears or violations of the provider's terms of use.
- Update the contact information for your domain, especially the email address, as you will receive emails during the transfer process.
Step 2: Request authentication code (domain auth code)
An authentication code (also known as an "auth code", "EPP code" or "transfer code") is an alphanumeric code that you must request from your current domain provider. This code serves as a security measure to ensure that only the legitimate owner of the domain can initiate a transfer. Request the auth code via your current provider's control panel or contact their customer support if you need help.
Step 3: Initiate domain transfer with your new provider
Once you have received the authentication code, go to the new domain provider's website and search for the option to transfer a domain. Enter your domain and the authentication code to start the transfer process.
Step 4: Confirmation emails and completion of the transfer
You will receive an email to the contact address provided with the domain asking you to confirm the domain transfer. Follow the instructions in the email to approve the transfer. The entire process can take between 5 and 7 days, depending on your current and new provider.
Step 5: Check DNS settings
Once you have confirmed a transfer, you may have to wait a certain amount of time for the transfer to be completed. The duration can vary depending on the domain provider, but usually a domain transfer takes between a few hours to a few days. Once the transfer is complete, you should check your domain's DNS settings with the new provider and make sure they are configured correctly to avoid any downtime for your website or email services.
