netcup Data Center

The data center is equipped with a redundant power supply. This is also backed up by a UPS and a diesel-powered generator. Within the data center, redundancy is pursued right down to the level of individual servers. Every rack is equipped with two self-contained power rails, each of them is supplied with a 3 x 16 A power feed.

netcup GmbH is a listed member of RIPE, the Regional Internet Registry for IP addresses in Europe. The data center has multiple redundant connections to different internet exchange points, like DE-CIX, N-IX or AMS-IX, thanks to the integration into the Anexia Backbone Europe. The data center is equipped with self-contained network cabinets, located at the greatest possible physical distance from one another. Each of these network cabinets houses a (Juniper-branded) router and the core switches. From these switches, each top-of-rack switch is connected to the network. This provides an excellent level of fail-over protection.

Three independent air-conditioning units share the task of providing enough cooling power for data center equipment. One unit can fail entirely without endangering data center air conditioning. Each air-conditioning unit is connected to the redundant, uninterruptible power supply.

A "hot aisle/cold aisle" arrangement is used to deliberately route cooled air under server access flooring.

In addition to physical access control, the data center is also under 24/7 video surveillance. Any movement in the data center triggers an incident at an independent security company. If someone manages to gain unauthorized access to the data center, security staff can be on site within minutes.

To ensure good air circulation and simplify cable routing, we install special shelves (120 cm deep) with perforated doors and specially attached cable routing rails. Each shelf has a capacity of 1.5 tons.

In the data center itself, the cabling is installed using a dual routing system. To avoid power induction in the network cables and to ensure that everything is organized, the entire network cabling is laid above the racks. The power supply cables are laid under the floor covering. Each cable route is mapped in a computerized system: This makes troubleshooting cable faults particularly quick and effective.

Smoke alarms in raised flooring and air conditioning units can detect fire very early and trigger an alarm. The local fire brigade is familiar with the data center layout and can target firefighting to avoid excessive damage from fire extinguishing materials.

At least one spare of each part is available for immediate deployment from on-site stock for all systems operated by netcup. This enables an especially rapid response to outages.
